From Responsible Research and Innovation to responsibility by design

Drawing on more than eight years working to implement Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) in the Human Brain Project, a large EU-funded research project that brings together neuroscience, computing, social sciences, and the humanities, and one of the largest investments in RRI in one project, this article offers insights on RRI and explores its possible future. We focus on the question of how RRI can have long-lasting impact and persist beyond the time horizon of funded projects. For this purpose, we suggest the concept of ‘responsibility by design’ which is intended to encapsulate the idea of embedding RRI in research and innovation in a way that makes it part of the fabric of the resulting outcomes, in our case, a distributed European Research Infrastructure.

Diversity in Motion: From the Static Diversity Wheel Towards a Dynamic Concept of Diversity

Diversity Management is a concept highlighting that organisations and society in general can profit economically from social differences, i.e. diversity, by considering different dimensions of diversity. Therefore, diversity models are an important basis for Diversity Management. In working with the widely used Diversity Wheel, which was developed by Gardenswartz and Rowe (cf. Gardenswartz/Rowe, 2003), our own understanding has evolved, and we have designed a respective model. This paper gives an overview on how the work has developed in our own model. Further, it exemplifies how this basic model was applied and specified for the Graz University of Technology in the form of a “diversity crystal”.

Diversität in Forschungsprojekten berücksichtigen. Wie geht das?

Ein Handbuch für Forschende in Technik und Naturwissenschaften: Es bietet Anregungen für alle, deren Forschung sich auf Menschen oder lebende Materie bezieht oder von Zielgruppen genutzt wird, die sich hinsichtlich vielfältiger Aspekte unterscheiden (wie Ausbildung, Alter, Herkunft, Geschlecht usw.). In sechs Kapiteln wird mittels Leitfragen angeregt, mögliche Diversitätsaspekte zu identifizieren und zu integrieren und so innovativere Forschungsergebnisse zu erzielen — etwa indem neue Variablen definiert oder Methoden entwickelt und in Publikationen eingebracht werden.

When is a tool a tool? An analysis of guiding materials & websites to integrate dimensions of gender and diversity into research

This report lists and analyses 21 tools (among others IGAR, SAGER, GERD and PLOTINA) on how to integrate gender and diversity as research content concerning their content, focus, phrasing and potential usability for the addressed user groups. The results of this analysis provide insights concerning the design, content, and usability of such guiding materials thereby supporting the evaluation of the suitability for a certain field of application.

This paper examines approaches to measure the disciplinary background and career development of women and men in science by assessing a range of available data sources. It provides insights on how to derive figures allowing science projects to evaluate their gender ratios against a possible underrepresen-tation of women.

In den letzten Jahren sind seitens des Bundes und der Länder umfangreiche Bestrebungen in Richtung einer wirkungsorientieren Haushaltsführung beobachtbar. Die Kernthese dieses Beitrages ist es, dass das Gelingen entscheidend davon abhängt, wie Prozesse der Entwicklung und Umsetzung einer wirkungsorientierten Haushaltsführung auf-bzw. umgesetzt werden. Dies gilt insbesondere für Gleichstellungsziele, u.a. weil in vielen Verwaltungseinheiten, die bisher nur im geringen Maße Gleichstellungsaspekte bearbeitet haben, derartige Ziele auf den ersten Blick nicht immer „auf der Hand“ liegen. Der Beitrag basiert auf Erfahrungen, die die AutorInnen im Rahmen unterschiedlicher Projekte zum Themenbereich Wirkungsorientierung und Gleichstellung in den letzten Jahren gesammelt haben sowie auf verfügbaren Wirkungsberichten und Dokumenten auf Ebene des Bundes und der Bundesländer (v.a. der Steiermark).
